MICKELSON SUFFERS FROM ARTHRITIS

Phil Mickelson said he’s been bothered for the past two months by psoriatic arthritis, a joint condition that at one time had him questioning whether he’d be able to swing a golf club again. Mickelson, the second-ranked golfer in the world, enters this week’s U.S. PGA Championship as the favorite among oddsmakers to win the season’s final major tournament. Speaking today at his pre-tournament news conference in Kohler, Wisconsin, Mickelson revealed that the condition first started bothering him the week before the U.S. Open in June. He said he hasn’t had any pain since starting treatment two weeks ago that keeps his immune system from attacking his joints.

“For five or six weeks I was a little unsure how it was going to affect me long term,” Mickelson said.

“Now that I feel confident it’s not going to affect not only the rest of my career or my life, I feel a lot better about it and I’m more at ease to discuss it.”

Mickelson, who turned 40 in June, took a month off after finishing fourth at the U.S. Open. While on a family vacation in Hawaii, he said the condition got progressively worse.

“Every joint in my body started to hurt to where I couldn’t move,” said Mickelson, who won the Masters Tournament in April. “I would just lay down and I couldn’t roll over. I was concerned about being able to swing a golf club. I’m surprised at how quickly it’s gone away and how quickly it’s been able to be managed.”

Mickelson said the condition affected his preparation for last month’s British Open, where he returned to tie for 48th. After another three weeks off, he tied for 46th place last week at the Bridgestone Invitational in Akron, Ohio, where he shot an 8-over-par 78 during the final round. Mickelson started getting weekly injections after meeting with specialists at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. Joint pain, stiffness and swelling are the main symptoms of psoriatic arthritis, which can affect any part of the body from the fingertips to the spine, according to the Mayo Clinic’s website. Mickelson said he started lifting weights last week after a seven-week hiatus and now feels “90 percent.”

“Heading into the PGA, heading into the last week, I’m probably not as sharp as I would like to be,” said Mickelson, who won the PGA Championship in 2005. “I’m not sure again where I’ll be on Thursday but hopefully I’ll be ready.”

CHELSEA AND MADRID AGREE CARVALHO FEE

Chelsea have agreed a fee with Real Madrid for the sale of Portuguese international defender Ricardo Carvalho, the English Premier League champions announced here on Tuesday.

“Chelsea Football Club can confirm it has agreed terms with Real Madrid for the transfer of Ricardo Carvalho,” said a statement issued on the London club’s official website.

“The transfer is subject to a medical and the player agreeing personal terms.

“Chelsea would like to thank Riccy for his six years of service, and we wish him well in his future career.”

The Blues’ announcement, which comes just days before the new Premier League season starts on Saturday, paves the way for Carvalho to join compatriot Jose Mourinho, his manager at both Porto and Chelsea, at Spanish giants Real. Carvalho won the Champions League with Porto in 2004 when Mourinho coached the club. He joined Mourinho at Chelsea that year for a fee of around 20 million euros but last year he fell down the pecking order at the west London club. In total he made 210 appearances for Chelsea, scoring 11 goals, and during his time at Stamford Bridge, helped the team win three Premier League titles, two FA Cups and two English League Cups. A regular for most of his time at Chelsea, he made just 18 appearances last season – which he has called “the worst year of my life” – as injuries caused him to fall out of the starting line-up. Last month the 32-year-old Carvalho told Spanish sports daily that it would be “a dream” for him to be reunited with Mourinho at the Bernabeu.

“If there was a possibility to sign with Real Madrid, I would go there right now swimming or running.

“With Mourinho I experienced two marvellous stages at Porto and Chelsea. To have the opportunity to win another Champions League with him at Real Madrid would be tremendous.”

Mourinho arrived in a blaze of glory in the Spanish capital after leading Inter Milan last season to the treble of a domestic league and cup in Italy as well as the Champions League.

Tracy McGrady is getting a chance to rejuvenate his career with a team hoping for a rebound of its own. McGrady and the Detroit Pistons have agreed to a $1.3 million, one-year contract, a person familiar with the negotiations told The Associated Press on Tuesday. The person spoke on the condition of anonymity because the deal hasn’t been announced. McGrady, a seven-time All-Star and two-time scoring champion, has played just 65 games the past two seasons with Houston and New York because he had major surgery on his left knee in the middle of the 2008-09 season.The 6-foot-8 wing drew some interest from teams this summer, including the Chicago Bulls, before choosing to play for Detroit. Now, the Pistons might have a greater sense or urgency to trade Richard Hamilton or Tayshaun Prince to fix their logjam on the perimeter. The 31-year-old McGrady averaged 8.2 points last season, his lowest-scoring season since 1997-98 when he was a rookie with the Toronto Raptors after skipping college. Just two years ago, though, he averaged 21-plus points for the eighth time in his career. If McGrady accepts his role, likely as a reserve, he could prove to be a bargain playing for the veteran’s minimum even if he doesn’t approach his career scoring average of 21.5 points.

“I’ve made a lot of money over my career and I could retire right now and I could be fine financially,” McGrady said in February after he was traded by the Rockets to the Knicks while making $23 million in the last year of his contract. “My kids can be fine when they get older. Money is not an issue for me.”

McGrady, who is from Bartow, Fla., was drafted No. 9 overall in the 1997 draft by Toronto. He went to Orlando in a sign-and-trade deal in 2000 and was dealt four years later to Houston. His last healthy season was five years ago. He missed 34 games during the 2005-06 season with back problems, elbow and knee injuries led to him missing 16 games two years later and microfracture surgery put his career in jeopardy about 1 1/2 years ago. If he’s relatively healthy, happy and effective for the Pistons, McGrady will provide a boost for a team that missed the playoffs this year for the first time since 2001 with its worst record since 1995.

Tell us about the rat logo on the back of your suit. Who designed it?
A friend from Paris called Pasky designed the logo. He’s designed crash
helmets for many other riders, he’s a really cool guy who I met on tour in
France recently.

Did you have any input in its design?
Only that I wanted it to look aggressive and not like a church mouse!

Is there a story behind the design?
There used to be an illegal road race in Essex around 15 years ago, called
the ‘Rat Run’. It started at Rat Lane, hence the name.

Why and how did you become interested in racing?
I’ve been interested in racing since I was 14, the natural progression is to
get on the track and emulate the people you admire. I got the chance and did
a few races between ‘98 and 2000. I got the taste for it again this year and
Crescent Suzuki put a bike together for me. The buzz is back.!

Will you be competing?
That’s difficult right now, but I’m booked on track days and will be
competing in the 2011 season.

How fast were you going?
Errr yeah… Fast! Times are good, but only practice will get me up the sharp
end.

Do you have any plans for the future?
To take part in a Moto GP, ha ha ha, I can only dream…
